This week, The Bank of England has asked the general UK public to submit the names of figures of national scientific importance that they would like to appear on the brand new £50 banknote. The final decision will be announced in six weeks' time.
From the submissions, a shortlist will be put together by an expert committee including physicist Simon Singh and space scientist Maggie Aderin-Pocock, and the final choice to be made by Mark Carney, the Bank’s governor.
Here are some of the potential candidates that may be added onto the new £50 notes.
- Stephen Hawking
- Rosalind Franklin
- Ada Lovelace
- Alan Turing
- Dorothy Hodgkin
